Appreciation – In remembrance of Alain Cribier

DR Aliain Cribier  is one of the  finest interventional cardiologist who introduced several interventional techniques. Alain Cribier was best known for performing the world’s first transcatheter aortic valve implantation in 2002, the first mitral commissurotomy in 1995 and the first balloon aortic valvuloplasty in 1986.

He was a very kindhearted man who helped middle and lower income countries in developing interventional cardiology. He involved several Sri Lankan cardiologists in his training programs in Rouen France in between 1994 – 2000 when interventional cardiology was in infancy stage. Several of our senior members of Sri Lanka College of Cardiology benefitted from this program and helped to develop interventional cardiology in Sri Lanka.

The impact of his innovative spirit and unwavering dedication cannot be overstated. Through his groundbreaking work, he revolutionized the approach to aortic valve disease treatment, offering hope to countless patients.

He received numerous accolades and recognition throughout his esteemed career. His awards, including the prestigious Lasker-DeBakey Clinical Medical Research Award and the EuroPCR Ethica Award, serve as testaments to his exceptional achievements and the impact he made in the field of interventional cardiology.
